Large windows can provide a great view of the outdoors. However, they also allow others to see into your home. To control the times when the view is open, you can install shutters on the interior of your windows. The shutters come in standard sizes and can also be custom-fit to your windows.

Before ordering or purchasing shutters, you'll need to measure your windows. Some windows aren't completely square, so measure the windows at the top and bottom, and use the shortest measurement. If you're going to paint the shutters yourself, lay them on a flat surface and paint the exterior side first, then finish with the interior. This way, paint drips or runs won't be as visible.

Once the shutters are painted, it's time to grab some tools.

Materials needed:
Drill, with 1/8" bit, countersink bit and Phillips driver bit
Measuring tape
Safety glasses
Combination square
Interior shutter package, which will include hinges, magnetic catches, and mounting/filler strips

You'll need to make sure that the frame is completely flush so the shutters will align properly. You may need to build up the middle section of the frame so that it is flush with the rest of the frame.
  1. Use a combination square to mark the placement of the hinges on the shutters (figure A).
  2. Dry-fit the hinges and mark the positions for the screw holes. Drill pilot holes, and screw the hinges to the shutters. Mark the placement of the hinges on the shutters and screw them into place. The number of hinges used depends on the size of the shutters.
  3. Align the hinges on the mounting strips, mark and drill pilot holes (figure B), and screw the hinges into place.
  4. Use a countersink bit to drill two pilot holes into the mounting strip (figure C).
  5. Place the mounting strip into position on the frame. Insert screws into the holes and let the shutter hang.
  6. Align the rest of the mounting strips and secure them to the window frame. If the size of your window frames does not require or allow you to use mounting strips, simply place the shutters into the frame, mark the holes in the hinges, and drill pilot holes for the screws. Repeat this step until all shutters have been placed.
  7. Install magnet catches on the windowsills to help keep the shutters closed (figure D).
