Having trouble with a sticking doorknob? It probably just needs a little cleaning .
Materials:
screwdrivers
penetrating oil
shop towels
paper towels
cotton swabs
duct tape
Steps:
- First, you'll need to remove the doorknob. You may need to use an offset screwdriver (figure A) so you can get at the screws easily. Usually, though, you can use a regular screwdriver. Loosen and remove the two screws holding the knob in place . Then pull the knob halves off the door (figure B).
* Roll a short piece of duct tape together with the sticky side out, and place it on your work area . When you take your doorknob apart, you can place the screws on the tape so they don't get lost.
- After you've removed the knob, loosen and remove the screws holding the bolt in place (figure C), and take it out as well.
- Lay some paper towels on your work area, and place the doorknob parts on the paper towels. Then spray them liberally with penetrating oil (figure D).
- Allow the oil to soak in for a few minutes. Then wipe the parts with a lint-free shop towel (figure E) and a cotton swab (figure F). Be sure to remove as much oil as possible because the oil can attract dust.
- After the doorknob parts are clean, replace the knob on the door by reversing the removal procedure.
