Steps:

1. Use the folding rule to measure the width and height of the inside of the window frame (figure A). Go to the store and pick out some blinds. Most home improvement stores will cut them to size.

2. Mark mounting points for the brackets on the top board of the window frame. Bring the brackets out far enough from the window so the blinds do not hang up on the window. About 1-1/4 inch should do.

3. Pre-drill holes, then mount the brackets with a manual screwdriver (figure B). Remember to wear safety goggles when working with any power tools.

4. Place the end caps on the blinds and snap them into place (figure C).

Hints:

  • Follow the directions for the specific blinds you're installing.

  • Having an assistant to hold blinds in position makes life so much easier.

  • Make sure that the brackets are positioned correctly so that the blinds will be centered in the window and, more importantly, will not catch on the window frame.

  • Always drill pilot holes before actually screwing in the brackets. Use a drill bit that's slightly smaller than the screw you'll be using. And be sure to wear safety glasses while drilling.
