Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to install door pulls in a new set of pocket doors. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.
Tools:
tape measure
pencil
combination square
screwdriver
safety glasses
dust mask
router
power drill
door pulls and screws
Steps:
1. Measure and mark pull location. Pulls should be about 36 inches off the ground. Mark across both doors using the combination square (figure A). Be sure to also mark each door as right and left before taking them down.
2. Remove doors and take them out to the work area. Measure location and trace outline of pull onto each door (figure B).
3. Measure the depth of the border of the pull using the combination square (figure C), then transfer that to the door (figure D).
4. Adjust the router to the depth needed for the pull. If the cut looks too deep, adjust the router to cut out only half the depth needed then readjust the bit and cut out the rest.
5. Put on safety gear and use the router to cut out the pattern, making two or three passes if needed (figure E).
6. Drill a pilot hole for the mounting screws, and insert the screws by hand to avoid damaging the finish (figure F).
7. Repeat for the other door, then re-hang the doors and enjoy.
