Chris Wypyski wants to add to the charm of his 1927 Spanish-style home by turning an extra bedroom into a cozy den. His plan is to expose the original plywood subfloor and treat it to look like old pine boards, and to enclose a closet with beautiful doors he'll build himself. Chris has only been doing home improvement for a few years, but with the help of his friend Maron, he plans on creating a casual and comfortable sanctuary to enjoy for years to come. Chris and Maron prepare the project area by pulling up the carpet. Chris begins the first day of the project by attaching a jig to the floor. This acts as a guide for the router Chris then uses to cut 1/8" deep grooves into the plywood. The grooves are parallel to each other, run the length of the room, and are spaced apart to suggest the edges of hardwood planks. After watching Chris for a while, Maron takes a crack at the router and does a fine job. Then, after sanding the floor, Maron and Chris apply an umber stain, wiping off the excess with a dry rag. Next, they apply a layer of blue paint in the same manner.
Now it's time for Chris to build the doors to his closet, and Maron is once again lending assistance. Chris' experience with furniture projects comes in handy as he begins cutting the wood. Maron even gives it a try and does well. The pair run into some difficulty when they try cutting longer pieces on a table saw, but they manage to get the job done. Then Chris makes the mortise and tenens, which will help hold all the pieces of the doors together.
Chris and Maron begin test-assembling the doors, only to realize that some of the pieces need to be trimmed. After sawing them down, they reassemble the doors, adding glue to make sure it all stays together. With the project completed, Chris is satisfied with his relaxing new den. One of his neighbors has even asked if he'll come give her plywood subfloor the same treatment.
