Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a guest install a set of new sliding track doors for her closet. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.

power drill with Phillips-head bit and twist bit

Steps:

1. Lift old doors up and out of the track, then using the drill and screwdriver bit to remove the screws holding the track along the top of the opening (figure A). Always wear safety glasses when working with power tools.

2. Remove the bottom brackets.

3. Assemble the upper track for the new doors and while a friend helps you hold it in place drill pilot holes for the mounting screws (figure B). Mount the track using screws.

4. Place the bottom track on the floor, then hang first the back then the front sliding door. Let the doors fall to find the center for the bottom track. Position the bottom track then remove the doors.

5. Mark the mark the position of the lower track on the doorjamb, then make a mark in each of the holes along the track for the mounting screws (figure C).

6. Move the lower track and pre-drill holes for the mounting screws. If you're drilling through carpet, carefully pull back the fibers to reveal the backing then press the carpet down with a damp towel to avoid snagging the fibers with the drill and causing a run in your carpet.

7. Position lower track and attach with mounting screws. Re-hang the doors, back door first, then clip the lower mounts into the track (figure D).
