Figure A
Handywoman Adair Thies explains how to install a doggie door.

  • Bring your dog along to the pet store when choosing a doggie door to make sure that it's the correct size for it (figure A). If your pooch is still a puppy, be sure to buy a door that's going to be large enough when it grows up.

  • Make sure the dog will fit through the door before installing it. If not, return the door and get the next-largest size.

  • Lay out all the parts and tools before starting and read through the directions a few times to become familiar with them.

Steps:

  1. Position the pet door away from the door hinge.

  2. Tape the template of the pet door on your door and trace the outline of it (figure B). Be sure to mark holes where you'll need to drill.
  3. Drill holes at all four corners (figure C) of the pet door--large enough to get the jigsaw blade through. You may want to make indentations at the drill points with a screw and a hammer to make starting the drill easier.

  4. Insert the jigsaw blade into one of the holes, line it up and cut out the door opening (figure D).

  5. Place tape on the bottom or foot of the jigsaw before cutting out the door hole to prevent the saw from scratching the door.

  6. Use the file to smooth down any rough edges.

  7. Place the bracket or frame of the door over the opening and drill holes for mounting screws (figure E).

  8. Attach the frame with supplied hardware (figure F).

  9. Caulk around the edges of the frame for a weather-tight seal (figure G).
