Nautical Theme

Curb Appeal : Episode CRB-404 -- More Projects »
Architect Anna Scheidegger begins the transformation of Bob Cullinan's home at the front entry area, starting with the small stairway that leads to the front door. She asks contractor Tim Rice to remove the existing stairs and replace them with wooden steps that gradually blend with the deck and offer a more clearly defined front entry path.

Next Scheidegger swaps the solid front door for a glass-paneled piece, highlighting it with brass fixtures, including a door handle and down lights that accentuate the nautical theme. Finally, she repaints the exterior deck a steel gray color and the walkway a rust-red hue to play up the contemporary horizontals, while blending more coherently with the landscape.

Scheidegger now turns her attention to the front and side areas of the house, including the landscaping. First she alters the look of the stairs that go from the street to the deck by replacing the wrought-iron railing with a wooden one and relocates the railing onto the house itself.

To complete the landscape, Scheidegger turns to landscape designer Andrea Taylor. Taylor has landscaping contractor Fernando Ballarena remove the overgrown juniper and plant tall architectural shrubs and grasses. She even uncovers a pond, which she integrates back into the landscape.
