Architectural details add style, character and can increase the value of your home. Crown molding, wainscot, medallions and ceiling beams can be added to your decor by following these design basics:
- Determine the purpose of the details. Architectural details add character and definition to windows, walls and doorways. They can make a space to look larger, smaller, intimate , stylish or hide spatial flaws.
- Choose the type of detail you'll need. There is an abundance of architectural details to select from for your home including crown and base molding, chair railing, applied panel molding, medallion and beams. Used in combination these elements add structure , style and a touch of class to your home.
- Scale the detail to the room. For visual balance it is critical to choose the right architectural details for a space--not too big and not too small. Most moldings come in different sizes and widths, so make sure it is proportionate to the room.
Tip: If your ceiling is eight feet in height, make sure that the crown molding is six inches or less in width and the base molding is five inches or less. Set chair railings 36 inches above the floor. If your ceilings are lower than average, the railing should be lower to make the wall seem taller, but you shouldn't go any lower that 30 inches.
