Georgia-Pacific's wall treatment expert Jamie McKeon demonstrates techniques and decorating ideas for using molding trim in the home.
  • Molding can add interest, style, and even value to a home. Create the look of wide molding at the ceiling by attaching crown molding at the top of the wall with finishing nails, placing a base cap two to three inches under it, and painting the space of wall between the two the same color as both moldings.
  • For an attractive effect, install a chair rail and crown molding (which you should paint before installing) over a wallpaper border. Then add a combination base: a 1" x 6" piece topped with a base cap, and a base shoe at the bottom to protect the baseboard. All three treatments can be used in one room. Paint them all the same color to create continuity.
  • If your ceilings are eight feet high or less, use narrow molding effects at the top of the walls. Ceilings reaching nine feet or higher need wider, more dramatic treatments to make a statement.
  • For a door or window treatment, place a wooden rosette at each corner and connect them with casings. Since the rosettes form the corners, the casings can be cut square on the ends--no mitering is required!
  • Molding comes in two types: solid and finger-jointed. Finger-jointed molding is made up of smaller pieces combined into a solid piece; it's less expensive than solid by as much as 30 percent. It can't be stained, however, only painted, as the joints can show through the stain which will vary in color on the different pieces of wood. Solid molding can be either painted or stained. Keep in mind, moulding is generally made of pine but is available in oak and other hardwoods for a price.
  • To install a window treatment, use 3D or 4D finishing nails. As always, be sure to wear safety goggles. Rest the treatment on top of the window casing, and attach it by countersinking the nails as hammering directly into the wood could damage it. After the nails have been driven, fill the indentations with wood putty and paint it to match the wood.
