Steps: 1. Remove ceiling panel by pushing up into the cavity above and angling it so it comes out (figure A). Always wear a dust mask and safety glasses when performing work above your head.
2. Set the new ceiling tile facedown on a sheet of scrap cardboard and place the old tile facedown on top of it. Draw a line to mark where to cut (figure B).
3. Take the utility knife and cut the new panel to fit. Use a short straight edge to ensure a nice, even cut (figure C).
4. Fit the new tile into position (figure D). Continue the process, replacing one tile at a time. If the ceiling tiles have a grain, make sure the grain lines up. For longer cuts use the long metal straight edge.
5. If you think your tiles may contain asbestos, contact your local EPA office for information on how to have a sample tested. If asbestos is present, contact a professional to deal with the problem.
6. To replace light panels, follow the same procedure. Remove the old panel and place it on top of the new one and use it as a template to mark your cuts. Wear safety gloves when cutting, as the edge of the plastic panel may be sharp (figure E).
7. Score the plastic several times with the utility knife using the straight edge as a guide. Then hold the straight edge firmly against the panel while snapping off the cut (figure F).
8. Use the flat-nosed pliers to snip away any little imperfections along the edge of the new piece (figure G). Pop the new panel in place and repeat the process for other panels (figure H).
