Mathias Ham House

Special Presentation : Episode HHM-S -- More Projects »
This three-story, 22-room Italianate mansion was designed in high Victorian style for Mathias Ham, who made his first fortune in Dubuque from mining the lead that was hidden in the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi.

The home is topped with an octagonal-shaped cupola, which provided an ideal vantage point for Ham to oversee his ferryboat operation below. Built high on the bluffs of which he made his fortune, this 1856 villa became an enduring symbol of Ham's abundant life on the Mississippi.
