The Gold Coast is Chicago's premier downtown neighborhood, just north of the skyscrapers. State Street is perhaps the most prominent of streets in the Gold Coast, as immortalized in the 1920s song Chicago: That Toddlin' Town. From the south end, State Street runs through the hub of the "Loop," which is the name of the circle pattern of the elevated train. Continuing through downtown, some of the best shopping on the street can be found.
The residential portion of State Street begins at East Division Street and ends at the town's north side at Lincoln Park. Here the street is known as North State Parkway and is full of brick and stone townhouses that were built after the Chicago fire in 1871.
