Tour the Homes: Chicago's North State Parkway

Dream Drives : Episode DRD-111 -- More Projects »
The Gold Coast is Chicago's premier downtown neighborhood, just north of the skyscrapers.

State Street is perhaps the most prominent of streets in the Gold Coast, as immortalized in the 1920s song Chicago: That Toddlin' Town. From the south end, State Street runs through the hub of the "Loop," which is the name of the circle pattern of the elevated train. Continuing through downtown, some of the best shopping on the street can be found.

The residential portion of State Street begins at East Division Street and ends at the town's north side at Lincoln Park. Here the street is known as North State Parkway and is full of brick and stone townhouses that were built after the Chicago fire in 1871.

Figure A — Lori and Steve Gersten turned this 19th-century Romanesque mansion into a modern delight. Full of clean lines and plenty of natural light, it brings out the best in this historical mansion along North State Parkway.

Figure B — They preserved a historical presence in the house by re-creating the woodwork in the home. White oak, instead of the usual dark mahogany, creates a "light and airy" feeling within the stoic architecture. An attached green house brings the outside in and adds light to the room. The clear acrylic and brass staircase balustrade was Lori Gersten's own design, which creates a sharp and contemporary look.

Figures C and D — Chicago architect Andrew Rebori designed this striking modern-art style building in 1938. Rounded glass blocks and horizontal lines define the exterior. Rebori built two houses on the lot and left an open courtyard to increase the sense of light and space. Current homeowner Robert Fitzpatrick feels the choice of using glass brick provides privacy yet "floods (the room) with light, and it's like being inside a sculpture." Modern furniture and contemporary art accent the streamlined rooms. The home is one of the best examples of Chicago's architectural creativity.

Figure E — This elegant French-style manor along North State Parkway was built for prominent surgeon Dr. George Isham in 1899. In the 1960s and 1970s, the house was the center of the social scene as publisher Hugh Heffner's home. Today, the urban mansion is divided into several spacious apartments.

Figure F — Marian Hymen's simple and modern unit has a very pleasing design. Russian oak floors and recessed lighting add a soothing warmth to the home. Hymen added four windows into what was once a solid wall, creating more light into the open floor plan. Throughout time, this mansion has reflected the current styles along this prime location.

Figure G — Designed in 1860, the park was re-named for President Lincoln after he was assassinated in 1865. Lincoln Park is a lakefront playground at the doorstep of North State Parkway. It is especially known for its zoo and conservatory. In the Victorian times, people would often come to "see and be seen" in their Sunday finest.

Figure H — The many gardens, including the Grandmother Garden and the English garden, add to the natural beauty of the park. This oasis in the city is located in the heart of Chicago's Gold Coast.
