Cozy Chevy

For Coleman Berry, the first step in renovating his new place was driving it off the lot. Berry turned a 1960 Chevrolet school bus into a 220-square-foot home for himself and his dog, Butter Bean. However, getting there was a long and bumpy road.

Coleman always loved the customized busses he saw on the road so he decided to buy a bus, touch it up and sell burritos out of it. He enjoyed it so much that he decided to buy second bus and live in it. The soaring price of land around Asheville, N.C., also helped make the idea of a home on wheels an attractive alternative.

Coleman was inspired to line the interior with oak, poplar and cedar panels by the custom railroad car on the old television series, The Wild Wild West.

The entire conversion process took about two years, but now when visitors step inside there's no mistaking it's a home. Coleman installed electricity and plumbing and the home features a kitchen and living room, bedroom, bathroom with a toilet and shower and even a portable porch.
