Little Schoolhouse on the Prairie

When Rebecca Cross and Maxwell MacKenzie decided to go back to school, they did it in style. Literally. They picked up a rustic 1905 schoolhouse and shipped it nine miles to a slice of land in Minnesota that MacKenzie bought years before.

As an architectural photographer, MacKenzie included his love of plans and buildings into the schoolhouse. He also added a hangar to the quaint farmland. The family replaced an entire wall with windows to enjoy views of the river from the comfort of their living room. Space is tight so most of the furniture was built in place. Minimal landscaping lends the schoolhouse a lonely presence reminiscent of traditional prairie structures.
