Oceanfront Tower

Since oceanfront property is hard to come by in Topsail, N.C., Taye and Lloyd Bost found an old observation tower and turned it into their beach home. This is definitely not a typical beach house. It consists of a concrete tower, attached to a modern addition.

The tower was built in the mid-1940s for Operation Bumblebee, a post-World War II missile testing program. The top of the tower, which once held tracking instruments to follow missiles, now affords expansive ocean views. Not only is this unconventional beach house comfortable enough to entertain family and friends, it's also strong enough to stand up to the occasional hurricane.
