Bank On It

Every city seems to have an abandoned downtown bank. In St. Joseph, Mo., Heather and Ken Shearin converted a 1910 bank into a home. They even kept the vaults and a security camera to preserve the limestone building's past.

Instead of piles of cash the vaults now house collections. Ken keeps his toy collection in one and Heather turned another into a secure walk-in closet. Since the Shearins preserved what they could of the bank’s history, they were excited to find old deeds and documents. A neighbor gave them a mailbox, a gift she’d received for once being a bank customer. Although they didn’t find any money stashed away, they did reap a wealth of architectural treasures including marble floors, murals and hundreds of glass blocks.
