Linda Beach grew up in Honolulu and spent her adult life as a pilot, a foreign correspondent and a TV star in Japan, where she lived for 20 years. She has since returned to Hawaii and staked her claim in an area called Waipio Valley. It isn't easy to get to her home and the commute includes driving through a river upstream.
The site is also home to a beautiful Monkey Pod tree that's nearly two centuries old. Beach was so taken by the beautiful tree that she decided she just had to live in it and enlisted the help of a couple of local boat builders to create her arboreal dwelling.
The house isn't especially large--only about 24 by 20 feet--and it has windows on all sides. The bathroom, which includes a compost toilet, is one level below, and a shower is located in another cabin on the property.
These days it's hard for Beach to climb the tree house stairs, so she spends her nights at another house on the property. But for many years she lived in it full time. She now rents the home out and has hired Carla and Daniel Alvarez to act as caretakers. Carla handles the reservation and office work and Daniel takes care of the maintenance.
The tree house has been a temporary home to rock stars and other celebrities, and Beach has received lots of wonderful letters from people who have stayed there.
