When Lucinda and Ardell Hoveskeland bought their beautiful red Mercedes roadster, the previous owner wouldn't sell it unless assured that the car would be kept in a garage. The Hoveskelands were already planning to renovate their 1950s Rancher, so they bought the red ragtop and made plans to add a second garage.

Their architect came up with a plan to turn the carport of their house into a garage. He added a second garage that was set back from the main house, softening the home's long straight lines (figure A).

Though small, the couple's garage is big on style. The glass-paneled door had to be custom made and features insulated glass panes (figure B). The exposed cedar and redwood framing were selected for their durability.

The garage eschews solid walls for glass and open screens, lending the garage an airy, beautiful simplicity (figure C).

With the Benz backed into the driveway, the Hoveskelands' garage becomes a great place to throw a party (figure D). Ardell says the garage has made the entire house a more pleasant place to live.
