Flying Saucer House

Extreme Homes : Episode EXT-506 -- More Projects »

Martha and Jim bought this pre-fabricated home from the previous owners and moved it in pieces on a flatbed truck to their beautiful lake lot, where it was assembled on the spot. A small number of these well-built homes were manufactured in the late '60s. The pod sits on four legs atop concrete pads in the ground, and the septic system, well and electricity are connected through the base. Maintenance is minimal in this pod home: in the spring they just hose down the yellow exterior.

Many of the interior's custom-built appliances and furniture are original to the house. The sectional sofa and the concealed cabinets make the most of only 500 square feet of living space. An extra bed can be assembled with the coffee table and part of the sofa. Among the home's most appealing features are the large windows. Because the kitchen is so small, the stove is only 11-1/2 inches, so they do most of their cooking outside. Storage space is also sparse: just one tall closet. In fact, the whole pod is only 28 feet in diameter.
