Shenandoah Valley Cedar Masterpiece

Cathleen and Nick Snow found the ideal retreat from their busy lives in the rolling hills of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. But when they couldn’t find an existing home to fit their needs, they decided to build their own on a 60-acre site.

Architect Page Carter quickly learned the Snows had strong ideas about what they wanted. Nick loves the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Cathleen grew up in Hong Kong, and traveled throughout Asia. She had also lived in a house designed by architect Alden Dow, a student of Wright. The couple also felt strongly about having an energy efficient, passive solar house.

Working with a local builder, Page designed a 4,000-square-foot cedar and glass home that makes use of green and regional materials. The result is a Wright-style house with Asian influences. Every room on the main floor offers plenty of light and views of the valley, especially the dining room with its glass corner window. The bamboo floors in the living room make it an ideal room for practicing yoga. The library offers a cozy retreat on a rainy day. A tower with floating stairs leads to three bedrooms on the second floor.
