Gnome House

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-1003 -- More Projects »
When builder and homeowner Mark Chapic decided to investigate foundation options for a guesthouse he wanted to build, he geared up in scuba equipment and dove into a frigid reservoir! Now, nestled between two boulders in a small gorge, his unique guesthouse is designed to blend seamlessly into the rocks that surround it. This was accomplished by using part of the reservoir wall for the foundation.

Chapic further incorporated the house into its surroundings with an interior two-story rock cliff wall and front entrance steps cut into the natural sandstone. A roof of sloped planes accommodates the curves of the surrounding boulders. Inside, a series of lofts make this 800-square-foot structure feel light and open. The dining room loft overlooks the living room and the outside with its smooth water and craggy boulders. The cozy sleeping loft has a ceiling of skylights.
