Innovation House

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-1001 -- More Projects »
Not all people are fortunate enough to live in one of their own designs. Architect Richard Williams was able to afford his lifelong dream by renovating an existing 1940's ranch house in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Preserving only the framing and foundation of the original structure, Williams and his builder, Brad Pritchard, added roofing, windows, cladding, and interior walls to create a simple, yet rich home.

Williams used this opportunity to test out new designs and materials that many of his clients were hesitant about using. His use of translucent polycarbonate panels (CPI) for roofing and room dividers add light without the glare of sun, which helps reduce energy cost for lighting. Similarly the suspended plywood ceiling in the kitchen has small round holes that create a dappled forest-light effect that eliminates the need for kitchen day-lighting.
