Humidifier Facts and Tips

House Detective : Episode HDT-512 -- More Projects »
Our homeowners in Falls Church, Virginia, learned that a humidifier is only effective if it has been cleaned and properly maintained. But what is a humidifier, and how do you know if you need one?

A humidifier does just what you think it does - it adds humidity to the air in your house. It's used in the heating season to add moisture to the warm, dry air pumped out by the furnace. Some humidifiers are free standing. Others can be connected directly to your heating unit. It's recommended that humidity levels between 30 and 50 percent be maintained inside a house, for comfort and health. Here's a few easy ways to tell if you need a humidifier:

  • A hygrometer measures the amount of moisture in the air. Purchase one at your local hardware store and measure the humidity in several locations around the house. If wood furniture looks dry and begins cracking, it's usually a sign that humidity levels are too low.

  • Another sign is increased static electricity. You know, those fingertip shocks, they're another indication that moisture levels in the house need to be increased.

Maintaining proper humidity inside a home is a balancing act. Too much moisture causes condensation problems. Too little and the air becomes uncomfortable. But a well-maintained humidifier can help even out that balance. Follow manufacturers instructions for cleaning and maintenance.
