The home of Thomas Heyward Jr. is considered Charleston’s Revolutionary War house. Heyward was a Charleston patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Built in 1772, the home was designed in the Georgian style in vogue before the Revolution, while the architectural scale and the interior detail of the home reflect the prosperity and prominence of the Heyward family. This fine home was appropriate for President George Washington’s stay in 1791, when he stopped in Charleston on his grand tour of the new nation.
