When Marcy and Larry Doreau bought a rundown farm in western Wisconsin, one of the attractions for them was the proximity to the river. Though there was a habitable home on the farm, they preferred the look of an old dairy barn. Trouble was, it wasn't that close to the river. Since what they really liked about the barn was the shape of the roof, they just lopped the top half of the barn off of the foundation and moved it down by the river (figure A). The Doreaus dropped the dairy barn topper onto a new foundation and set about transforming it into a unique, elegant home (figure B).

They left the 1,800-square-feet of the main level wide open (figure C). The upstairs features another 1,200-square-feet of living space. The master bedroom is located in the part of the barn where hay was once stored and features gorgeous views of the river and countryside (figure D).
