A drip edge can be installed in just a few minutes by a do-it-yourselfer.
An image of a drip edge is pictured at right. It's just a long piece of metal, formed to protect the bottom edge of a roof. If the roof doesn't have one, water can splash onto the roof edge and the fascia below, eventually causing rot. The easiest time to install a drip edge is when the shingles are laid. But if that wasn't done, a do-it-yourselfer can put a drip edge under the existing shingles.

If the shingles are still fairly new and flexible, just roll them up temporarily while you work. If they're older and brittle, you may have to remove the lowest course before you begin.

  • Slip the wide flange under the bottom row of shingles.
  • Mount the drip edge low enough so it just barely extends over the gutters.
  • Then seal the top of the drip edge with a continuous bead of roofing cement. And secure the ends with roofing nails.
Once the drip edge is in place, reinstall the shingles, if necessary.

It’s surprising how many roofs don't have a drip edge, since they can minimize maintenance headaches. Check yours to be sure.
