Wire mesh, or hardware cloth, is useful around the house for projects ranging from keeping small critters out of the attic or garden to sifting sand and topsoil.

Hardware cloth is galvanized, welded and woven so it's very strong and weather resistant. It's fairly flexible and comes in rolls with widths between 2 and 4-feet. The standard size has 1/2-inch spacing between the wires.

Always wear gloves, long-sleeved shirt and eye protection as the cut edges of the cloth can be very sharp. Use tin snips when cutting hardware cloth.
