Non-skid Paint

Concrete steps like the ones in Berkeley aren't the only surfaces that get slippery when wet. It's a concern with any kind of ramp or foothold that might get coated with rain or snowmelt. That includes painted wood and un-textured metal.
Luckily there are several options. The simplest one is to apply strips of non-skid tape (see image).

A more durable and less-noticeable option is to use the kind of non-skid paint our House Detective mentioned. You can either buy it pre-mixed, or mix your own in any color using construction sand or a texturizing product. Or if you want an easy solution that doesn't change the look of your steps, there's clear, non-skid spray. Here's how it's applied:

  • Sweep the surface, then wash it down with water and let it dry.
  • Fill any cracks or holes with an appropriate filler for the surface.
  • Finally, just spray on the non-skid texture from about a foot away, moving evenly back and forth.

If you use the non-skid spray, you'll need to reapply it once every six months or so for best results.
