Sometimes good dogs do bad things to carpet. But don't worry, a quick patch and the floor is as good as new and your best friend's out of the doghouse.
Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows a guest how to repair a section of carpet pad that has been soiled by a dog who just isn't quite as housebroken as he needs to be. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.

stair tool
replacement padding
double-sided carpet tape
disinfectant

Steps:

1. Use the knee kicker and stair tool to release the carpet from the tack strip along the wall (figure A).

2. Roll back the carpet and measure for your patch with the folding rule (figure B).

3. Snap a chalk line to make a guide you can follow while cutting away the damage pad with a utility knife (figure C).

4. Remove damaged padding and dispose of properly.

5. Vacuum up any remaining debris.

6. Disinfect any soiled areas along the floor or tack strips.

7. Cut a new pad to fit and line up the edges. Trim with scissors and utility knife to fit area (figure D).

8. Secure pad with carpet tape.

9. Roll carpet back and reattach to tack strips using knee kicker and stair tool.
