Removing layers of paint from contoured surfaces, such as crown molding or picture railing, is never easy. But you can make the job a little easier by turning up the heat. A heat gun, that is (figure A).

A heat gun is easy to operate. Just turn it on and heat the paint until it starts to bubble, then follow with a putty knife or scraper (figure B). And make sure to use tools with wooden handles. A plastic handle on your scraper may not be able to stand up to the heat.

Heat guns come in various sizes and power ratings. A unit that has at least 12 amps of power should be enough for most applications. It's important that you follow safety precautions when working with a heat gun. Always wear heavy gloves, long-sleeved shirts and adequate eye protection.

Also make sure the workspace has adequate ventilation. And if you're removing paint containing lead you'll need to take all the necessary safety precautions.
