Wood shims can bring some stability to a wobbly appliance, bookshelf or door. Use one shim, or place multiple shims back-to-back. Just take the tapered edges and slide the shims together to fill the gap (figure A). To steady a bookshelf, just slide a shim under the edge to correct the imbalance. Score along the exposed part of the shim and snap it away (figure B).

Shims are available at your local hardware store or home center in bundles or packs. They are usually about 6-inches long, 2-inches wide and tapered up to a half inch thick. With a supply of shims in your toolbox you can really even things out.
