The Property
The heart of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is the National Historic Landmark tenement building, where thousands of immigrants from 20 nations lived between 1863 and 1935. The Tenement Museum consists of the visitor center where all tours begin and the 1863 tenement building. The mission of the LESTM is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattans Lower East Side, a gateway to America. The tenement building is the first preservation in the United States of a homestead of urban, working class, poor and immigrant people.
Special Events and Tours
The Museum offers a variety of educational tours, including topics such as how residents reacted to the depressions of 1873 and 1929, the history of immigrants in the garment industry and a neighborhood heritage tour.
Public Access
Due to the Museum's space constraints, groups of 10 or more people must reserve for a tour or program at least one month in advance. LESTM group programs are offered daily. Most of the programs are available Tuesday through Sunday morning and all day on Monday.
