When architect Heidi Brown and her husband Seth Fisher bought their 1830s church, it was completely boarded up and falling over. But they saw a lot of potential in the old Charleston, S.C., building. The Gothic trusses, 30-foot ceilings and tall arched windows offered the potential for an exhilarating living space. Today the building is a home with quite a story to tell. After a somber career as a church, it enjoyed a somewhat rowdier use in the 1940s when it served as an American Legion hall.
