Host Don Bleu says this underground dome home reminds him of something out of a 1950s science fiction movie. Nestled in the hills of Santa Cruz, Calif., this underground marvel gives the appearance of mushrooms pushing up through the forest floor covered in ivy, leaves and brush (figure A). Throughout Lloyd Turner's architectural career, he's been interested in rounded shapes and energy-efficient designs (figure B) and knew exactly what he wanted in his dream home. Turner designed this earth sheltered dome home in 1980 and he and his wife Ann completed this 1,500-square-foot house in six months (figure C).

The dome shaped form was first insulated with a fabric form, then sprayed with urethane foam and concrete. Then the forms were covered over with earth keeping all the rooms at least six feet underground. When the dome home was first built, Turner thought it looked like something had landed from Mars and Ann wondered how the neighbors would react to their unconventional home. Fortunately, the neighbors have adjusted well.

Past the vine covered entryway (figure D), is a well-lit central dining room the Turner's refer to as the solarium (figure E). The solarium and kitchen's hexagonal Spanish floor tiles enhance the dome's adobe-style design.

Arched hallways lead to the compact kitchen featuring custom-curved cabinets made of antique kola wood (figure F). Off the solarium is an intimate living area where Turner installed multi-prism skylights that give the room a distinctive glow (figure G). Many of the rooms in the house have skylights, allowing light into this underground abode. The skylights open up to allow warm air to flow out and fresh air in, and Ann designed a unique curtain system for the circular-shaped windows (figure H).

Toward the rear of the home a hallway connects the guestroom and master bedroom. The guestroom doubles as a study for Lloyd and the master bedroom has its own nook in a small dome of its own. It features a custom made wall-to-wall mattress, a comfortable and perfect place for gazing into the circular skylights above (figure I).
