Gary Mintz had searched throughout Washington, D.C., looking for the perfect place to call home when he found a beaux-arts style bank. From the moment he laid his eyes on the rundown commercial space, Mintz knew how he had a diamond in the rough and set about transforming it into a streamlined modernist home.Architect Michael Hauptman came on board to help Mintz turn his ideas into reality. Mintz' profession as a cardiologist encouraged his attention to detail, down to such touches as the night deposit box that now serves as the mail slot. Edward Marolda of the Naval Historical Center provided information on the bank's former customers and came up with archival photographs depicting the building's history. Mintz' conversion has preserved this building's history and made him a very satisfied homeowner.
