Host Barte Shadlow discusses the plans for the renovation and meets with the contractor for a tour. The architect explains the plan to keep the home's footprint but double the size by adding a second story. The top of the garage is demolished and block foundation is put in place to support the new addition.
Excavation is underway at the rear of the home for a slight extension that will add space and take care of a structural problem. The formwork goes in for the footer and reinforcement bars are set into place while the contractor prepares to pour concrete.
New floor joists go in that span both the old and new foundations, while concrete is poured in the garage area. Work begins on the front of the house to fix structural problems found in old window openings.
Framing begins on a new rear wall, and the contractor explains how the interconnected construction will help the home withstand a hurricane. Blockwork is set at the new detached garage, while at the main house the walls are installed and the subfloor for the second story is built. After nearly all the walls go into place, prefabricated shower units are hoisted into the house.
