Samuel Cupples House

Dream Builders : Episode DRB-1010 -- More Projects »
In 1888, wealthy St. Louis entrepreneur Samuel Cupples commissioned the prominent architect Thomas Annan to design a magnificent mansion that would speak of Cupples' business success. The St. Louis architect adapted the style of Henry Hobson Richardson and designed a three-story home in purple Colorado sandstone complete with limestone gargoyles and elaborate architectural details.

The Grand Hall running the full expanse of the main floor is elaborately executed in carved oak paneling with classical motifs. Stained and clear leaded glass windows designed in the Tiffany style grace each floor. It exists today as one of the rare examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture in St. Louis. The house is now owned by the St. Louis University and offers a visual feast for the public to enjoy.
