Planet Christmas

In 1973, electrical engineer Chuck Smith programmed some small circuits in front of his parent’s house and connected them to five strings of Christmas lights to make the bushes look like they were chasing each other in slow motion. People came from miles around to check it out.

Now almost 30 years after his original experiment, friends and neighbors refer to Smith’s Franklin, Tenn., home as Planet Christmas. He uses more than 130,000 miniature lights connected by seven miles of wire, all controlled by a computer and nearly 400 circuits.

Organization and preparation are keys to Smith's Las Vegas-caliber light show. His garage is filled with hundreds of numbered copier paper boxes, each filled with strings of lights and other components. Smith also works year-round checking the lights so everything's bright come Christmas.

Every wire, cable and connector is numbered and crosschecked. Thanks to Smith's logistical skills he says he can set up his entire display in one day.
