Assembling a Prefabricated Storage Shed

1. First things first: Read the instructions thoroughly and do an inventory of all materials and equipment.

2. Start by building the floor frame according to directions. Pre-drill pilot holes in the ends of the floor joists before driving in nails to keep the wood from splitting (figure A).

3. Make sure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from each corner (figure B).

4. Toe-nail the floor frame to the foundation beams. Pre-drill pilot holes at an angle before nailing (figure C).

5. Next nail down the floor boards. Look at the boards as you go and turn them so the smoothest, most attractive side faces up. Trim the ends of the boards if desired for a smooth finish (figure D). Just line up and snap a chalk line then use a circular saw to trim the edges.

6. Assemble the walls according to directions. Place walls to the side after completing each one. When they're all finished, carefully raise them into place and use clamps on the corners to hold them in place while you nail the floor plates down (figure E).

7. Assemble and attach the supports for the ridge vents (figure F).

9. Cover the entire building with asphalt-impregnated felt paper to act as a moisture barrier (figure H). Attach paper using the hammer stapler.

10. Attach shingles according to instructions. Attach the bottom row and use the level to make sure they're straight. Fashion a guide block to make positioning rows of shingles easier (figure I).

12. Tack the vapor barrier felt paper to the sheathing strips (figure K).

14. Nail up corner trim and attach doors with low profile screws. Step back and admire your new shed (figure M).
