Help Around the House host Henry Harrison helps a guest replace the old angle-style water shut-off valves under her bathroom sink. The old valves have seized-up and no longer function. Harrison suggests replacing them with new valves that only require a quarter-turn to close. Since the guest was planning on replacing her bathroom sink and fixtures, Harrison also showed her how to remove the sink. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.

Tools:

nut driver
adjustable wrenches
putty knife
towel
bucket
needle-nose pliers
water shut-off valve key
new quarter-turn valves (2)
waterproof or heatproof grease

Steps:

1. Turn off the water supply to the entire house at the meter using a special shut-off valve wrench (figure A). Open a valve inside the house and drain water from the entire system.

2. Place a bucket under the drain and remove the drain (figure B).

3. Use a nut driver to remove the retaining clips on the underside of the sink (figure C).

4. Loosen the nuts holding the supply lines to the valves with an adjustable wrench, then finish unscrewing nuts by hand (figure D).

5. Use a putty knife to break the seal around the sink and lift the sink out of the vanity (figure E).

6. Disconnect the old angle stops. Hold the body of the angle stop with an adjustable wrench while loosening the nut with a second wrench (figure F).

7. Once the nuts are loose, unscrew the body of the angle stop by hand while holding the nut with a wrench. Pull the valve toward you as you unscrew it (figure G).

8. Spread heatproof grease around the ring for the new valve and slide it into place on the water supply pipe (figure H). Slide the ring back as far as you can.

9. Insert the new valve (figure I). Tighten the nut by hand on the valve making sure not to cross-thread and strip the threads. Tighten the nut by using two wrenches. Repeat for the other shut-off valve.

10. Turn the main water back on and check for links. Now you're ready to replace the sink and fixtures.
