When you need to attach something to brick or drill a hole in masonry, you'll want to get a hammer drill (figure A). Besides the rotary drilling action, a hammer drill also has a pounding action for breaking into masonry. Sort of like a small-scale jackhammer.


Also, be sure to use a masonry bit when drilling into masonry or brick (figure B). It has a special carbide-imbedded spear on the end for extra hardness.


Hammer drills can cost $200 or more, but you can rent them for a short-term project. Always remember to wear gloves, protective clothing and eye protection when working with a hammer drill.
