Mounting a Mailbox to a Brick Wall

Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows how to attach a mailbox to an exterior brick wall. Harrison also demonstrates how to use a specialized bit to drill into masonry and install plastic anchors in the wall. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:
power drill with carbide-tipped masonry bit
ball peen hammer
punch with hardened tip
short and standard-length Phillips-head screwdrivers
safety glasses
new mailbox

Steps:

1. Remove old mailbox if necessary. Place mounting brackets for new mailbox in desired location and mark holes for drilling (figure A). Try to position bracket so mounting holes fall in mortar lines.

2. Put on safety glasses punch a starter hole using the hardened-tip punch and ball peen hammer (figure B).

3. Put a piece of tape on the masonry bit to mark how deep the holes need to be drilled and drill holes (figure C).

4. Drive plastic screw anchors into the holes with the ball peen hammer (figure D).

5. Place bracket against wall and insert screws partially into all anchors (figure E). Once you're sure everything line's up all right, tighten screws.

6. Have a friend hold the mailbox in place while you secure the box to the bracket. Finish up by attaching the colorful flag (figure F).
