Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a homeowner replace her old tin gutters that are cracked and leaking (figure A) with new vinyl gutters (figure B). On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a three.

Steps:

1. Put on the safety goggles and remove the long spikes holding the old gutters in place using the pry bar and hammer (figure C).

2. Ease off the old gutter and measure for the new gutters.

3. Cut the vinyl gutter to fit with the hacksaw (figure D). Slip the scrap 2x4 inside the gutter to make it keep it from bending and allow an even cut.

4. Mount the gutter so that it slopes 1/4-inch every 10 feet for proper drainage. Mark a line for the new gutter using a chalk line.

5. Mount the brackets for the new gutter. Use the chalk line for a guide and mark spots for screw holes with a grease pencil. Place a bracket every two feet for proper support (figure E).

6. Snap the vinyl gutter in place.

7. Assemble the downspout and attach.
