William Carson built the Carson Mansion in Eureka, California in 1884. Mr. Carson headed west in the 1850's looking for gold, but stumbled across another rich resource on the West Coast-lumber. The vast resources of local wood made it possible to create the extravagant ornamental woodwork that is typical of a style of Victorian house called a "Painted Lady."
