Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a guest install aluminum flashing to divert the water from the windows. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.

Steps:

1. Remove nails along the upper window edge using a nail puller (figure A).

2. Pry up the siding to loosen it a little from the side of the house. This will give you a little room to slide the flashing beneath the siding.

3. Scrape out any old caulking using a putty knife. Put on rubber gloves and safety goggles and clean the edges of the casing with a water and bleach solution and allow it to dry.

4. Apply a thin bead of sealant along the edge of the window (figure B). The sealant acts as a backup to seal areas between the casing and the siding.

5. Measure and cut the new flashing to fit the window, allowing a half-inch overhang on each end. Wear gloves to protect your hands from any sharp edges when cutting and installing the flashing..

6. Place the flashing under the siding and nail it in through the original holes (figure C).

7. Use a nail set to sink the nails under the surface of the siding.

8. Fill nail holes with a little wood putty. When the putty dries, sand off any excess.
