Steps:

  1. Remove the old waterspout by loosening the screw holding it in place. You might have to twist the spout counter-clockwise to free it from the spout nipple at the wall. If you put the handle of a screwdriver up into the spout, it will provide leverage and make the spout easier to turn (figure A). The screw will probably be on the underside near the shower wall (figure B).
  2. Take the spout to a hardware store and buy a replacement. Check the spout to see if you have the tools at home that you'll need to install it, because some of these spouts require an Allen wrench rather than a Phillips-head screwdriver.
  3. Twist the new spout onto the spout nipple in clockwise direction. Once it's flush against the shower wall, secure the screw that holds it in place. This is where you might need an Allen wrench (figure C), a flat-head screwdriver or a Phillips-head screwdriver, depending on what sort of screw this new spout has.
  4. Run a bead of caulk along the gap between the spout and the shower wall (figure D). Wipe away any excess with a wet paper towel.

Clean Showerhead Tip:

  1. To clean the showerhead, fill a plastic bag with a solution of water and vinegar.
  2. Fit the bag over the showerhead, making sure you submerge the showerhead in the solution (figure E).
  3. Secure it around the showerhead stem using twist-ties, tape or rubber bands.
  4. Allow the solution to sit for a couple of hours, remove it, and rinse. Your showerhead should be free of water deposits and build-up.
