White summer phlox, hollyhocks and Shasta daisies help give this beautiful perennial bed an old-fashioned look. Shades of pink, blue and purple bejewel the bed from spring through fall, with silver-leaved foliage adding extra appeal. After its pink or purple summer-to-fall blooms fade, wall germander, once a staple of knot gardens, holds its dark green foliage throughout the winter. The purple-leaved version of miscanthus lends winter interest. For the best year-round look, add broadleaved evergreen and conifer shrubs behind the bed.
