A succession of bloom carries this beautiful shade garden from early spring through fall, and variegated foliage helps provide additional color and textural interest. 'Beacon Silver' lamium, for example, produces its pink flowers from late spring to mid summer, but its silver and green leaves remain for the growing season, and in warmer climates, into early winter. Some areas serve double-duty: the foxgloves, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are interplanted with Japanese anemone, which bloom in late summer to fall. The bleeding hearts of late spring give way to the late summer and fall bloom of the hardy begonias. In winter the heuchera, lady's mantle, iris, fern and hellebores provide modest foliage color, and the hellebores begin blooming in mid to late winter. For the best look year-round, include broadleaved evergreen and/or conifer shrubs behind the perennial bed.
