Face it: That Jenny Lind crib and country-pine glider just aren’t going to work with your carefully
cultivated modern space. What’s a hip mama (or daddy-o) to do?

Fortunately, parents with a modern bent–-and an aversion to cutesy theme nurseries–-no longer have to sacrifice style when it comes to outfitting their baby’s room. With the recent explosion in mod nursery goods, everything from the bassinet in which your newborn will slumber to the table where you’ll change her diapers to the storage system where you’ll attempt to organize her playthings can blend seamlessly into your edgy, minimalist aesthetic.

“Today’s parents are into a modern look for themselves, and don’t necessarily want to give that up when a baby arrives,” explains interior designer David Netto, who launched his own line of sleek nursery furniture after being dismayed by the lack of modern choices when he was furnishing a room for his own firstborn five years ago. Now, Netto is one of dozens of savvy merchandisers selling uber-stylish baby gear to design-minded moms- and dads-to-be.

Of course, cutting-edge style for the “minis” (as mod wee ones have been dubbed) rarely comes cheap, and $500 mobiles, $1,500 rocking chairs and $4,000 cribs aren’t unheard of. But more affordable versions of this clean-lined baby booty are starting to trickle down to mass merchandisers such as Ikea and Target. What’s more, democratic-minded designers like Netto–who just rolled out the cut-rate CUB line as an
alternative to his distinctly high-end NettoCollection–are cooking up tasteful, playful modern pieces that are within reach of even non-trust-fund types.
Read on to see our favorite new nursery picks, and to get expert tips on putting together a chic look for your budding modernist.
